I love your blog, what a great idea. I laughed when I saw that the herbal clinic treats 'sexual wickedness', but it reminded me, on a more serious note, about an article I read recently on what it is like for lesbians and gay men in Ghana. The article had an interview with a gay man who had been disowned by his family, and had been beaten and stoned on the street for being open about his sexuality. I imagine the rates of mental illness for lesbians and gay men living in that kind of context must be quite high, yet very much hidden.
Thinking of you, and hope all is going well. Keep posting the photos!
I trained as an anthropologist and occupational therapist in the UK. I am conducting research around Kintampo in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana. My research looks at the experiences of people living with mental illness in rural Ghana, including the impact of the illness on work, family life, social relationships and the household economy, as well as the responses of the individual and their family to mental illness, including sources of advice and treatment employed.
